Rob Mackenzie experiments in the realist tradition. He works alla prima in both plein air and studio, using oil on panels and canvas, and sketching in watercolor. His inspirations are the fresh, natural light of Corot’s field studies, Cezanne’s sense of solidity and place, and Van Gogh’s vibrant color. He admires the field studies of Clyde Aspevig and Tom Thomson. Largely self-trained while working as a surgeon and a hospital administrator, he has studied with Doug Braithwaite of Park City, Utah, Jeanne Mackenzie of Fort Collins, Colorado, and Terry Plater of Ithaca, New York.
