Holy Island at Lindesfarne has been a center of Scottish religious history since the 6th century AD, when St Aidan brought Christianity here from Ireland. It is only accessible at low tide, across a three-mile wide tidal estuary. The standing ruins of a 12th century priory still seem to echo with the chants and bells of long ago.
