Hadrian’s Wall was built in 122-126 AD in northern Britain at the very end of the “known world”—and much of it on the edge of high cliffs. Peering over the wall and precipice into the foggy-dense, rainy mists of this Northumbrian spring, it’s not hard to imagine the chill a Roman sentry might have felt.
